Ontario Green party Leader Mike Schreiner campaigned outside the University of Toronto this morning, hoping to attract votes from young people concerned about climate change.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe young people in this province need a more powerful and forceful voice where decisions are being made and that\u2019s exactly what the Ontario greens are going to continue to push for,\u201d Schreiner said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This was Schreiner\u2019s first appearance since Monday\u2019s leader\u2019s debate, where columnists with both the\u00a0Globe and Mail<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Toronto Star<\/a>\u00a0declared him the winner.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cFor everyone last night who said Ontario Greens won the debate, I would say if you want green, vote green,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Schreiner said that he was the only party leader to address the climate crisis with real solutions that ensure that the people of Ontario have \u201ca livable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said that the role of young people is very essential in boosting Ontario\u2019s new green economy and climate-ready businesses and that\u2019s one of the reasons why the Green party is striving to lower the voting age to 16.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Schreiner campaigned alongside Dianne Saxe, the Green party candidate in University-Rosedale.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Her Liberal party opponent, Andrea Barrack told Humber News that she does not think that Schreiner has won the debate and that he had one or two very good \u201crealistic\u201d moments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think from my perspective he won the debate because I don\u2019t feel like he was able to convince Ontarians that the Green party is ready to govern and that to me is what winning the debate is,\u201d Barrack said.<\/p>\n

She said that Schreiner\u2019s today announcement is not enough to convince the voters in the University of Rosedale riding, especially since there is no need for another opposition member at Queen\u2019s Park.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel that he probably convinced people who are otherwise going to vote Liberal to go over to the Green\u2019s side,\u201d Barrack said. \u201cUniversity-Rosedale needs someone who has a reasonable chance of being in a government.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Velma Morgan, Chair of Operation Black Vote Canada, told Humber News that Schreiner has been keen in his announcement to stress the importance of addressing climate change and amplifying the voices of youth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a positive announcement, I think any time that you can include youth in public policy it\u2019s a good thing and that\u2019s what he\u2019s trying to do he\u2019s trying to include the voices of youth in the decision-making table,\u201d Morgan said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She said Schreiner\u2019s last night\u2019s debate performance was positive as he addressed certain issues that have not been raised by other party leaders and that the winner will only be known on June 2^{.<\/sup><\/p>\n}

\u201cI think he did very well. I think he talked about issues that a lot of the other candidates aren\u2019t really talking about,\u201d Morgan said. \u201cIn terms of the winner, I guess we\u2019ll find out on June 2.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
